SSI Marine Ecology
Course Prerequisites
- Participants should have completed a high-school level biology course, (and enjoyed it).
- The course is academically challenging at a high school AP or college biology level. Persons who have not had science courses should discuss the class content with the instructor before signing up.
- By SSI standards, the minimum age for participation is 10 years.
- You must have an active SSI Diver Training Record on file at the dive shop. If you don’t, one can be started for you.

- Section 2: Biodiversity of Marine Life
- Section 3: Marine Ecology
- Section 4: Oceanography
- Section 5: Human Impact
- Section 6: Management and Conservation
Course Outcomes
- On successful completion of the course, you will be certified by SSI as having successfully completed Marine Ecology training, and have a digital certification card.
How the Course Works
- The course, including your at-home study of the online Marine Ecology training materials and your answering the online review questions will take several hours. There are no pool sessions, or open water training dives.
- When you sign up at the dive shop, you’ll be given access to the online training materials at the SSI website.
- While you are taking the course, and afterwards, your training specialist will be available for questions and discussion as needed.
- When you have completed the online sections and answered the review questions, you will meet with your training specialist at the dive shop, to discuss the course, sign off on the training certificate, your training record, and your log book. Yes, you need to bring your log book.
- There is no written final exam.
